01
Specify where the vehicle will be used
State the registration country, intended permanent use and recipient vehicle specification. Describe left-hand or right-hand road traffic explicitly. A seller’s shorthand such as LHD, RHD, left or right can refer to steering position or mounting position.
Ask the receiving workshop to identify the required lamp variant using the vehicle manufacturer’s information. Record the full part reference, lighting technology and left/right mounting side. Keep a pair’s individual references rather than assuming both lamps are interchangeable.
02
Read the markings without overclaiming
HELLA’s marking guide explains that the number following E identifies the country granting type approval. That number alone does not identify the lamp’s destination market or establish suitability for every vehicle registered there. Request readable photographs of the complete markings.
HELLA also illustrates different dipped-beam distributions and professional measurement. A photo of a lit lamp demonstrates limited operation; it does not measure aim, beam distribution or installed system performance. Avoid interpreting an unclear arrow from a compressed listing image.
03
Compare evidence at each decision point
Ask the workshop to review the actual assembly reference and any claimed traffic conversion feature. Record unresolved questions before paying. A general claim that software can change the lamp is insufficient without model-specific confirmation of the supported configuration.
Compare the lamp price with the workshop’s proposed checks and any required components or configuration work. Ask who will decide whether the completed installation satisfies the destination requirements. Keep that decision separate from the seller’s dispatch approval.
| Decision | Evidence | Decision owner |
|---|---|---|
| Destination | Country, permanent use, traffic side | Buyer and local specialist |
| Lamp variant | Full reference and complete markings | Receiving workshop |
| Installed result | Manufacturer instructions and professional checks | Qualified installer |
| Purchase release | Accepted reference and unresolved holds | Purchase approver |
04
Distinguish inspection from permanent approval
The cited UK MOT manual describes beam inspection and accepts masks or converters for temporary alteration in specified circumstances. That inspection context is not a universal approval route for a permanent import or for another country.
For the actual destination, obtain the applicable registration and installation requirements from the competent authority and qualified workshop. Do not assume a travel mode, converter, E marking or previous inspection settles all questions. This article provides purchasing questions, not a compliance certificate.
05
Agree the hold and return conditions
Before ordering, identify who accepts the technical variant and what happens if the delivered reference differs. Ask whether mounting, opening, coding or testing affects return terms. Record any review deadline and the evidence needed to raise a mismatch.
VIN EXPRESS can assess sourcing and shipment coordination using the agreed reference and records. Technical approval, beam testing and local acceptance remain with the designated specialists. Keep an unverified market variant on hold rather than merging it into an approved order.
06
Example: the cheaper lamp has an unclear market
Illustrative example: two listings show the same vehicle generation and mounting side. One identifies a destination-specific reference; the cheaper one says only original LED. The buyer asks for its markings and workshop review before choosing either offer.
If the seller cannot document the variant, the buyer can reject that candidate or seek another unit. The saving is assessed after the technical review and quoted installation scope. This example describes a purchasing decision, not a verified stock item or customer case.
VIN EXPRESS / Decision checklist
Before approving a used headlight
- Record destination country and traffic side explicitly.
- Identify each lamp’s mounting side and full reference.
- Obtain readable actual-unit markings and labels.
- Have the workshop confirm the supported variant and configuration.
- Check the destination’s permanent installation requirements.
- Agree review, hold and return terms before payment.
